Hello,

My name is Samanta and I visited your web page, Westie Rescue. I am so sorry to hear about Hannah, but I can surely know how you feel. My 8 year old pomeranian, Kiki, was killed by a coyote December 12, 2010, just before Christmas; we had her Christmas stocking out waiting for Christmas to arrive. My boyfriend and I woke up Sunday morning to give our dogs treats (i have a chihuahua/min pin too) and we could not find Kiki. We saw her tiny little collar laying in the backyard and that was all. We thought someone came over our fence and stole her since our house backs up to railroad tracks at Springdale and Bolsa, HB, Orange County and it was just before Christmas too. We thought maybe someone else wanted her as a pet. (We moved here near Bolsa in November 2009 from another area of HB). After awhile we noticed the coyote tracks on our back fence coming down and going behind our lawn chairs to where Kiki was taken and our hearts just dropped. (I also just had another dog, Peanut, pass away in May 2010, at the age of 12, two weeks before my 37th bday). We were devastated and we still are over the passing of our dogs but moreover what happend to Kiki - it wasn't her time to go, my boyfriend an I were not ready to let go just yet. I think about Kiki everyday and still have dreams about what happened. Kiki was a precious jewel. My boyfriend blames himself for not being able to help her; he was sleeping on the couch, literally 25 feet away from where Kiki was taken. If we only knew there were coyotes present in HB and that animals were being attacked or even Seal Beach near by. I have lived in HB for about 25 years and never heard of any coyote stories until what happened to Kiki and all of a sudden I hear all the coyote attacks that have occurred and still are occurring. We raised our back wall to our backyard another 2 feet to give it about 6.5 feet and even added coyote rollers on top. We keep the 2 dogs we have now, who are both rescue dogs, Lucy and Bella Rosa, locked inside at night. I even got 2 small tattoos in the memory of Peanut and Kiki. Dogs are our family, our kids.

It doesn't sound like there is much the city or county can do to these coyotes or will do...............since they are protected....Don't you think the city should be protecting our pets and small children......

On Monday 7/18/11 @ 3:30 AM my dog was outside (has doggie door access) doing his business when I was awakened by his screaming like something was attacking him. I jumped out of bed and ran outside only to find him standing next to the pool shaking. I checked him for bites and/or signs of an attack, but found nothing, no saliva, no bite marks etc. After finally getting back to sleep, I got up the next morning and investigated the back yard area. We too have a 6' high wall all the way around the back yard. I found that there were approx 6 large indentations in the side yard that appeared to be paw prints indented in the grass. I'm suspecting that it may have been a coyote, but did not see one. I was wondering if anyone else has seen signs of a coyote in Westminster area lately near Trask and Chestnut street. We used to have stray cats running around our house for years, however I haven't seen any in the past 8 months or more. Wondering if the coyotes ran out of food and are looking for dogs around 14 lbs in back yards.
